Script & Song
Writer
In addition to his work as a performer and director, crafting original stories and songs for the stage has been an important creative pursuit for Anthony Rohr. His writing reflects a continued interest in storytelling shaped by history, collaboration, and performance.
Among his most meaningful projects is his partnership with ABLE, Inc., an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities. Working alongside writing partner Mary Anderson, Rohr co-developed and produced an original play with music titled In Secret. Inspired by true events, the work portrays the investigation and lawsuit that ended the practice of institutionalization in North Dakota. A staging of the production in 2017 inspired a $50,000 donation to ABLE, Inc., helping to advance the organization’s work throughout the region. The project continues to engage audiences, with a recent reading at The Broadwater in Los Angeles receiving positive audience response during post-performance feedback sessions.
Additional writing work includes the development of an original one-man performance, Teddy Tunes, which continues to be presented annually at the Badlands Chautauqua in Medora, North Dakota. The production incorporates popular songs written about Theodore Roosevelt during his lifetime, using music to tell the story of Roosevelt’s life and legacy.
Rohr also contributes as a songwriter with Lostwood Media for the upcoming documentary Cowboys and Butterfly Kisses, with songs reflecting themes of rural life, parenthood, hardship, and loss.
His writing has also grown out of his teaching practice. When searching for repertoire suited to the specific strengths of his opera ensemble class, Rohr developed the one-act musical Tenting Tonight, written to highlight the voices and abilities of his students. Incorporating music from the Civil War era, the work weaves historical songs into an original narrative, allowing the music to emerge naturally from the story.
Across these projects, Rohr’s writing remains rooted in collaboration and storytelling, creating work that connects history, music, and performance in ways that invite both performers and audiences into a shared experience.
